South Africa 2006"African Safari"
By AST tour member Lesley Hardy We went on tour with AST, For eighteen days we'd be away Lots of papers came in the mail, And quite a few bills we had to pay
So we bussed and trained and flew and flew, At last we amassed in Perth They put us up in a big flash hotel, And finally we all got a berth
We flew eleven hours, that's a long time, But Jo'Burg was at last in sight Then just to do a bit more for the day, We flew on to Durban that night
In the 4th one dayer the boys did us proud, They won with three balls to spare In the final with a world record in runs, Thought we'd done it fair and square
Then came South Africa's turn to bat, With teeth gritted, they went at it in pairs Lots of noise from the locals around, Our world record was gone - it was theirs!
For the test we flew to Capetown, We got there in two hours or so Off to the Waterfront for a nice big feed, And a few drinks started to flow
Early next morning we boarded the coach, Going to the top on the cablecar Tabletop Mountain turned the weather on, And we could see very far
Robben Island was next on the ferry, The seals on the wharf were a treat Dolphins and penguins we saw from the boat, And the ex-inmate we had to meet
Had a tour of the island prison's museum, Saw Mandela's cell on the way They had to mine limestone to construct the roads, No matter the condition of the day
We all shopped till we dropped at the Waterfront, Had lunch and tea, then off to bed To be ready for the first test in Capetown, We couldn't be feeling like lead
The first test for Australia was a doozie, We won, it was all over in three So then we had this dilemma, What to do with two extra days free
The wind picked up, it started to blow, Bad hair days made us sob We all took a tour on the double-decker bus, Then off to dinner with the other touring mob
The Leopard and the Hippo buses each went their way, A wine tour on the Cape of Good Hope Went on a ferry to see all the seals, Sunning on a rock watching our boat
Zebras, Elands, Ostrich and Dassies, Kept company with the Baboons this day The little penguins came up on the beach, And our cameras all clicked away
The farewell dinner with Kerry and Merv, Was great, we all laughed at those two We ate and drank to our hearts desire, Next day we were off to the zoo
At daybreak we all left Capetown, Flew back to Jo'Burg and into the bus The five hours to Kruger National Park, With wild tucker cooked just for us
The came the day time safari, All the animals came out to see We all got a turn to take happy snaps, And breakfast in the park for free
All day we snapped and toured around, The animals were hard to spot in the grass One elephant got really cranky, And wanted to kick someone's arse
The next day we all swam in the pool, And watched the hippos at play We used our binoculars to get a good look, At the crocs in the river on display
Another night safari, with a feast fit for Kings, We all said goodbye to our group We had to get back and get some sleep, Before we all started to droop
The five hour bus trip ended in rain, But Jo'Burg was at last in sight We each had a few hours to kill, Before we all caught a flight
While I was away we had a cyclone, "Larry" came to North Queensland for a day The devastation was really hard to take, But my family and home were OK
The whole trip went off like clockwork, We went, we saw and we conquered We all had a ball for the whole 18 days, And now at home we're all stonkered
So Jamie, Stewie and Terry, From us you all get a big cheer And if you ever come to Tully NQ, I'll even shout you each a beer |
