Monday 10 June - Sightseeing Walk of St Johns

This morning after breakfast we head off together to explore the capital city, St Johns. Our walk takes in the popular Heritage Quay with its vast array of souvenir shops, clothing stores and eateries. We visit the impressive Saint John's Cathedral with its imposing twin towers built in 1845 and site history dating back as far as 1681, and also take a look at Antigua's Government House.

Our walk of St Johns is not complete without a trip down memory lane to the infamous Antigua Recreation Ground which hosted Australia's last Test in St John's in 2003. In what was one of the greatest Tests in Frank Worrell Trophy history, both teams were bowled out in their first innings for 240 before Matthew Hayden (177) and Justin Langer (111) posted a seemingly match winning 242 run opening stand in Australia's second innings of 417. Miraculously, after 128 overs on Day 5 the Windies reeled in the total with 3 wickets in hand thanks to Lara (60), Sarwan (105) and Chanderpaul (104). The ground was replaced by the new Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in the north of the island for the 2007 World Cup, but is still used locally today and remains a relic of the Windies Calypso glory days.

This evening presents the opportunity to sample St John’s town centre by night or simply relax and enjoy the local hospitality by the hotel’s pool, restaurant and bar.

In today’s earlier matches Pakistan take on Canada and Sri Lanka play Nepal.

Our included match transfer departs from our hotel direct to the stadium and returns following the end of play.
